Ornithological Hot Spots
The northeastern region of India, from Sikkim and Darjeeling in West Bengal to Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Bhutan, is a true paradise for birdwatchers. These areas are home to a remarkable diversity of rare and protected bird species, making them an essential destination for both beginners and seasoned ornithologists.

In Arunachal Pradesh, you’ll find some of Asia’s most elusive bird species, including the Imperial Heron, Malay Duck, Bengal Florican, and the beautiful Nuthatch. Meghalaya and Nagaland are known for their sacred groves and protected forests, where species such as the Bamboo Partridge and Kalij Pheasant thrive. Over 550 bird species have been recorded in Sikkim and Darjeeling.

Bhutan is another significant destination, where you can observe rare birds such as Hornbills, Pallas’ Fish Eagle, and the Satyr Tragopan.

The Kaziranga National Park in Assam, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a premier birdwatching destination, renowned for its rich avifauna. The park is home to over 480 bird species and offers a variety of habitats, from wetlands to grasslands and forests. Key bird species to look out for include the Indian Hornbill, the Great Indian Bustard, the rare Bengal Florican, and the endangered Pallas’s Fish Eagle. The park is also a haven for migratory birds, offering exceptional birdwatching opportunities year-round. With its unique combination of wildlife and birdlife, Kaziranga provides an unforgettable experience for ornithologists and nature enthusiasts alike.

In addition to the aforementioned regions, Rajasthan, Bangladesh, and Kerala offer excellent opportunities for ornithologists. In Rajasthan, the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary (Keoladeo National Park) is a world-renowned birdwatching destination and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It hosts over 370 bird species, including migratory birds like the Vultures and Greater Adjutant Stork. The park’s wetlands and open grasslands provide ideal habitats for a variety of species, from flamingos to rare cranes and vultures. Another highlight in Rajasthan is Sambhar Lake, known for its impressive population of flamingos, particularly during migration periods.

In Bangladesh, the Sundarbans mangrove area is an outstanding destination for birdwatchers. The mangrove forests are home to a unique birdlife, including the rare Indian Cormorant and the Collared Falconet. This region is also an important stopover for migratory birds along the coastline.

In Kerala, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in the Western Ghats offers excellent birdwatching opportunities. Here, you can spot the Malabar Hornbill, cormorants, and a variety of other tropical bird species in their natural habitat. The Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, also known as the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, is another highlight in Kerala, featuring one of the highest bird species diversities in India. It’s a paradise for birdwatchers seeking exotic birds such as the Sri Lanka Bush Warbler and the Indian Pitta.
